Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships offer an excellent opportunity to earn while you learn, combining hands-on workplace experience with formal training that leads to nationally recognised qualifications. They provide a practical alternative to full-time study and are ideal for individuals who thrive in real working environments. Apprentices develop valuable technical skills, build confidence, and gain the experience employers look for, helping them become truly work-ready.

Who we are looking for

At Falkland College, we seek applicants who are genuinely committed to pursuing a specific trade or profession. Apprentices should be motivated, willing to learn, and ready to take on the responsibility that comes with working and studying at the same time.

Some apprenticeship routes require you to meet entry criteria set by UK colleges and training providers. In addition, certain apprenticeships require British citizenship to access UK-based training. These requirements ensure learners can fully participate in all elements of their programme.

Apprenticeship sectors

We offer apprenticeships across a wide range of industries, helping to address skills shortages and support the future workforce of the Falkland Islands. Programmes are available in sectors such as:

  • Plumbing

  • Carpentry

  • Electrical

  • Business Administration
  • Health & Social Care
  • Childcare

  • Agriculture
…and many other trades and professions.

Entry Requirements

To apply for an apprenticeship with Falkland College, applicants must:

  • Hold Falkland Islands Status

  • Possess a valid British passport

  • Be 16 years of age or older

  • School Leavers in year 11 will be given a conditional offer upon receipt of application, just as you can expect from any College.

At Falkland College, we value this enthusiasm highly. A genuine interest in a trade, combined with motivation and a willingness to learn, is often a stronger indicator of future success than exam results alone. Many apprenticeships rely on practical skill, commitment, and problem-solving—qualities that passion naturally supports.

While qualifications are important, they are only part of the picture. We look for individuals who are eager to learn, enjoy hands-on work, and are committed to building a career in their chosen field.

All apprentices are expected to achieve:

  • GCSE English and Maths at grade C/4 or above, or equivalent Level 2 Functional Skills

  • A Level 3 qualification or higher in their chosen field upon completion

Monitoring and length of time

Apprenticeships typically take three to five years to complete, depending on the trade. Learning takes place both in the Falkland Islands and with partner training providers in the United Kingdom.

Apprentices’ progress is carefully monitored throughout their programme. Key assessments, practical tasks, and course components must be successfully completed before progressing to the next year of study. This structured approach ensures that every apprentice receives the support and guidance needed to succeed.

How do i apply?

School Leavers

All year 11 students will be given opportunities in term 1 to find out more about apprenticeships and submit an application during their careers lessons.  To apply a school leaver will need to complete the application form below.  Submitting an application does not mean you will get an apprenticeship, but will enable the Apprenticeship Coordinator to start looking at where an apprenticeship could be offered. In term 2 or 3 you will be invited to the College for a formal interview, with the College and the work placement.  After the interview you will receive a conditional offer letter from Falkland College, stating the GCSE grades required to be accepted onto the course.

If you would like to apply please complete the application form below and submit your application to cpollard@college.ac.fk

 Older Applicants

We welcome applications from people of all ages to join the apprenticeship programme.  It would be useful if you could book a meeting with our Apprenticeship Coordinator and a member of our Careers team to talk through all training options, so you can be sure to find the right pathway for you.  If it is the apprenticeship please complete the form above and submit it to cpollard@college.ac.fk

Private Sector Apprenticeships

Falkland College welcomes collaboration with private sector employers to create high-quality apprenticeship opportunities. As school-leaver cohorts are small, the number of young people seeking apprenticeships can vary from year to year. At times we have more interested applicants than available placements, while in other years we may have vacancies that cannot be filled.

Engaging with local employers is essential in helping students discover the breadth of careers available within the Islands. Activities such as school career days and work experience placements can greatly increase awareness and encourage young people to consider pathways where skills shortages exist.

If you are interested in offering an apprenticeship, we would be pleased to arrange a meeting to discuss your aims, the qualifications required, and how apprenticeship funding operates.

To learn more, please telephone 27133 or email cpollard@college.ac.fk

.
We look forward to hearing from you.

When do apprenticeships begin?

School leavers need to contact Falkland College with their exam results at the end of August.  Successful apprenticeships will begin during the last week of September, first week of October, where there is a general induction and some compulsory courses are completed, such as Health & Safety,  First Aid and safeguarding (if you are working in Education or with vulnerable adults).  All apprenticeships start their first year in the Falkland Islands, unless otherwise arranged and a college placement has been secured overseas.  Check the website Calendar to see when apprenticeships start this year.
